RUSSIAN PAGES OF UNKNOWN GREEK HISTORY: BISHOP OF CASSANDRIA IRENEOS PANDOLEONDOS AND RUSSIA

Abstract: after more than a hundred and fifty years since the death of Ireneos Pandoleondos  it is time to bring the Russian reader of this outstanding figure of Church history that has left an indelible mark in the history of the Greek and Russian Orthodox Church. The wisdom and strength of Metropolitan Irenaeus of Cassandria, whom the Greeks consider their national hero, exerted its influence not only on the history and politics of Greece at that time, but also on its spiritual life. Political and historical activity Kassentische Bishop Ireneos was carried out simultaneously with him and teaching in Khalki theological school. Since 1899, soon after graduation the Kiev Theological Academy, which was beloved by Ireneos Panteleymonov, he started teaching Russian language, Russian literature and introduce young Greek theologians to Russian Orthodox piety in Khalki. Panayotis Stamos, as the personal Secretary of Bishop Irenaeus of Cassandria, witnessed himself many of the works of a former KTA graduate, never seen before in the Greek province, who throughout his life remained its loving and faithful pupil. It is interesting that as an example for future Greek theologians Ireneos Panteleymonov suggested the work of Leo Tolstoy “The Master and The Worker”, which, in his opinion, reflects the depth of faith of the Russian right-glorious man. The Russians were loved by Metropolitan Ireneos, who often gave an example of the depth and subtle structure of the Russian soul to his students at the Khalki theological school.
